Overview

This project involved designing and building a user interface for a drone mountable search and rescue product, so that Bluetooth / Wi-Fi detection software could aid rescue missions.

Problem

The primary challenge was designing and creating a user interface that would integrate into the Android Team Awareness Kit (CIV) platform and support operations of the drone mountable unit.

Key constraints included:

Android Native UI
Integrated into ATAK (CIV)
Realtime Bluetooth LE / Wi-Fi detection and GPS mapping

Overview

This project involved designing and building a high priority application for Colt, so that the web application could be included in a press release regarding the safety recall and made available to customers as soon as possible.

Problem

The primary challenge was providing a reliable way for Colt to process safety recalls for its customers on a very tight timeline.

A rapid development cycle
Reliable means of data retention and validation
Careful attention to cybersecurity risks

Overview

This project involved the creation of a game development asset to be featured in promotional material for the NVIDIA product line.

Problem

The primary challenge was designing a Minecraft Adventure that would showcase the RTX ON features provided by NVIDIA GPUs.

Key constraints included:

The use of raytracing and other lighting effects made possible by NVIDIA hardware
Players needed to have an interesting world to explore
RTX ON features were to be implemented into all aspects of the adventure (puzzles, battles, etc.)

Seeing What’s Nearby

In the previous lesson, we learned how to answer the question:

Where am I on the filesystem?

We did that by using the pwd command to print our working directory.

In this lesson, we are going to answer the next natural question:

What is around me?

To do that, we will learn a new command called ls.

Knowing Where You Are

In the previous lesson, we focused on getting comfortable inside a terminal emulator and running our first command.

In this lesson, we are going to learn how to answer a very important question:

Where am I on the filesystem right now?

To do that, we will need to review some terminology and then have some fun learning a new command, which is pwd.

Welcome to the Course

In this lesson, we are going to get set up for learning how to navigate around the Linux filesystem using a terminal emulator.

Prerequisites

No prior experience is required, but some familiarity with what a terminal emulator is will be helpful
You do not need to have a Linux environment set up, as we will be using an online emulator to keep things simple
You do need a device with a web browser and Internet access, which you obviously have since you are reading this

Accessing the Linux Emulator

To keep things as simple as possible, I have decided to use a free, online Linux emulator as the environment for this course.

A Brief Overview of Obsidian

I have been using Obsidian to manage all of the Markdown files that I write.

It has been amazing.

As a tool, Obsidian does exactly what I need it to, without forcing me to use all of its advanced features.

Obsidian can do a lot of fancy things, especially because it supports a community-driven ecosystem of plugins.

Node Version Manager is one of my favorite CLI tools. As stated on the project’s git repository, it is a:

Using Dev Tools to Take Screenshots

Opening Developer Tools

To take a screen shot in Google Chrome, you need to Inspect the webpage with developer tools.

The easiest way to do this for most people is to simply right-click anywhere on the webpage and Select Inspect from the menu that appears.

Once developer tools are open, you need to make sure that the device toolbar is also open.

My profession of ~~choice~~ happenstance is Software Development (and UI/UX Design).

I like to say happenstance rather than choice because I was lucky enough to convert my nerdy hobbies into a career without earning a degree in Computer Science or Graphic Design.

I am the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Code Zealot Studios LLC, a development studio officially partnered with Minecraft and Microsoft. I am a Fullstack Developer and UI/UX Designer with over a decade of experience.

I am always coding or teaching others how to code. When I am not coding, I enjoy gardening and spending time with my wife and five children.
